CREATIVE RETREAT

Discover Underwater PORTRAIT Photography

As a NAPCP Ambassador, I am thrilled to extend an invitation to join me for a one-day creative retreat focusing on underwater portrait photography. Aligned with the NAPCP Inspired Gallery Event, I am hosting a day-long underwater portrait photography workshop to a small group of photographers. With over six years of experience in underwater portraiture, and the honor of being named Photographer of the Year by NAPCP in 2023, I am very excited to share my thoughts and expertise in this exclusive event.

Since 2017, I've had the privilege of photographing over 100 individuals underwater, continually refining my skills and crafting my own techniques. In this introductory workshop, I'll share the fundamentals and essentials of underwater portraiture, providing you with a solid foundation to build upon.

During the workshop, you'll gain valuable tips and insights into underwater portrait photography, forge connections with fellow photographers in an intimate setting, and enjoy a creative day of learning and rejuvenation. Whether you're new to underwater photography or looking to expand your underwater portrait portfolio, I'm here to guide you on this creative journey.

FAQ

Do I need a special camera or expensive equipment?

You can use a cell phone in a waterproof case, purchase an inexpensive underwater housing bag such as diCapac, use a GoPro or other waterproof consumer camera, or rent an underwater housing for your camera. I started my underwater portrait photography journey using my cell phone and still use it for behind the scenes images. I recommend not investing too much in gear before you see if you enjoy shooting portraits underwater.

Can I use these in my portfolio?

Absolutely. While workshop images cannot be used in photography competitions, they are great for adding new work to your portfolio. One thing to note is that cell phone photos are fairly limited in what you can adjust in post. So if you are looking for portfolio work, I recommend using a camera.

Do I need a wetsuit?

We will be shooting in a pool, so a wetsuit is not necessary.

Do I need a snorkel, scuba gear or a dive tank?

No, we will practice breath management for this class. No need for additional equipment.

Do I need to bring a laptop?

We will not be reviewing images or editing on the day of the workshop. Students who signup early will have the opportunity to participate in a virtual editing class the week after the workshop.

What is included in the class?

Access to a private pool, professional models, group instruction, breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes.

Can we drink alcohol at this event?

For the safety of everyone, alcohol or other intoxicants may not be consumed during the event. We will be doing a lot of breath management (holding our breath) as well as learning to be responsible for safety of our models. Being impaired in any way is unsafe for participants. That said, we would love to enjoy happy hour when the event is over!
